Understand where the material began

Natural diamonds formed through geological processes within the Earth before being brought closer to the surface and recovered. Laboratory-grown diamonds are produced through controlled growth processes, principally chemical vapour deposition or high pressure, high temperature growth. Neither origin tells you everything about the finished stone’s cut or appearance. Both categories require careful selection after growth or recovery, cutting and polishing.

Distinguish diamonds from simulants

A laboratory-grown diamond is different from an imitation such as cubic zirconia or moissanite, which has a different composition or structure. Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds can nevertheless have diagnostic growth features that allow laboratories to identify their origin. Similar appearance does not mean indistinguishable by every method. Ask for appropriate laboratory identification rather than relying on photographs, a visual inspection or a simple thermal tester alone.

Compare the actual options within your budget

Laboratory-grown diamonds typically carry lower purchase prices than comparable natural diamonds. That may allow a different balance of size and quality within a particular budget, but the result depends on current offers and the specifications being compared. Request like-for-like quotations where possible. Consider shape, measurements and intended use alongside the headline carat weight, and treat future resale value as uncertain rather than an assured purchasing benefit.

Read the correct kind of documentation

Report formats differ by laboratory, material and issue date. IGI uses the 4Cs in laboratory-grown reporting. Since October 2025, GIA’s qualifying colourless-to-near-colourless laboratory-grown assessment uses Premium or Standard overall descriptions; older reports may use earlier terminology. Read the actual report and verify it with its issuer. A report documenting quality or origin is not the same thing as a valuation or evidence of environmental performance.

Ask specific questions about responsibility

Origin alone does not prove that a stone has a low environmental impact, a fully documented supply chain or particular labour standards. Ask what the supplier can substantiate: production location, chain-of-custody records, energy claims or the scope and validity of independent certification. Choose the category that fits your preferences without assuming one is universally better. Clear disclosure and reliable documentation should be expectations for either choice.

Why consider laboratory-grown?

For some budgets, laboratory-grown diamonds make larger specifications more accessible. A range of available sizes and shapes can give a designer flexibility when composing a piece or matching a layout.

Those benefits do not make every stone interchangeable. Compare actual quality, documentation, availability and quotations. Environmental performance and traceability require evidence from the relevant producer and supply chain.
